Habitat/Ecology: Feeds on nuts, flowers, and buds, insects are eaten in the summer and are important for juveniles. Carrion feeding and cannibalism has been reported, squirrels may also eat bones, bird eggs/nestlings, and tree frogs/lizards. Total length ranges from 380 to 525 mm. 2 Dentition: 1/1, 0/0, 2/1, 3/3. 3 They do well in urban areas. Gestation lasts 44 days and most females are able to reproduce by 6 months. 2
Identification: Sexes similar, tail bushy. Pelage brown above, light gray/white below. 2
Observations: Not observed during class but common in the IRL watershed. Notorious robbers of bird feeders, these animals do well in urban environments as long as trees are present.
