Barrier Island - A narrow strip of land running parallel to the mainland.  In the eastern United States all barrier islands are migrating toward the mainland due to seal level rise.

Benthic - This word refers to the habitat and organisms that live at the bottom of a body of water.  The organisms are sometimes also referred to as benthos.  Examples of benthic community members include clams, mud worms and crabs.
